Cultivating Knowledge - A Case Study in Urban Farming Research

Co. & Pilot Consulting is proud to share our recent collaboration with the World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) on a research project exploring urban farming practices in the Philippines. This project, spearheaded by Ateneo Business Resource Center (BRC), aimed to gain valuable insights into the current state of urban agriculture within the country. Our team at Co. & Pilot Consulting played a multifaceted role in this research endeavor, providing crucial support throughout the entire process.

The World Vegetable Center, a leading international organization dedicated to vegetable research and development, partnered with the Ateneo Business Resource Center, a premier business development support organization in the Philippines, to conduct a comprehensive study on urban farming practices within the country. Co. & Pilot Consulting was contracted to provide crucial research support throughout the project lifecycle.

Our Role in the Research Journey:

Our team played a multifaceted role in facilitating this vital research effort. Our contributions spanned various tasks, each essential to the success of the study:

• Language Translation and Formatting: We ensured clear communication with participants by translating the questionnaire from English to Filipino, the primary language spoken in the Philippines. The translated version was meticulously formatted to seamlessly integrate both languages within a single document, ready for print distribution.
• Interviewer Briefing & Training: To guarantee consistent and accurate data collection, Co. & Pilot Consulting facilitated a comprehensive briefing session for the 13 interviewers involved in the study. This briefing equipped them with a thorough understanding of the questionnaire, research objectives, and best practices for administering the survey.
• Digital Data Collection:  Recognizing the growing importance of digital solutions, we constructed a user-friendly Google Form to mirror the printed questionnaire. This facilitated online data collection, offering respondents a convenient and accessible method for participation.
• Data Cleaning and Analysis: The research involved collecting data from over 300 completed questionnaires, resulting in a significant volume of information. Our team undertook the meticulous task of cleaning and organizing this data to ensure its accuracy and prepare it for subsequent analysis.
• Research Support and Writing Assistance: Co. & Pilot Consulting collaborated closely with the lead researchers from WorldVeg and ABRC. We provided research support by conducting literature reviews, compiling relevant data, and assisting with the analysis of findings. Additionally, we offered editorial support and formatting expertise in the development of the final research paper.
• Print Preparation and Presentation Design:  To ensure professional dissemination of research findings, we formatted the final research document for high-quality printing.  Furthermore, our team designed an impactful presentation deck to visually showcase the research outcomes, facilitating clear communication with stakeholders.

Challenges and Solutions

Urban farming is a rapidly evolving field in the Philippines. As with any research initiative, this project presented its own unique challenges. One significant hurdle was ensuring clear and concise communication with participants. By prioritizing language translation and conducting in-depth interviewer briefings, we addressed these challenges effectively.

Another consideration involved managing a substantial volume of data. Our expertise in data cleaning and analysis ensured that the valuable information collected could be utilized to its full potential.  Finally, the need to effectively convey research findings necessitated engaging visual communication strategies. Our design expertise in crafting a captivating presentation deck supported successful knowledge dissemination.
